The Jazz Lounge

Allan Berland – Host, The Jazz Lounge

Listen in: Mondays and Fridays from 8-9pm

The Jazz Lounge, created and hosted by Allan Berland, explores the Golden Age of jazz of the 1950’s and 60’s. You’ll not only hear great music, you’ll also learn about the musicians and their music. Much more than presenting a simple playlist, Allan has devoted hundreds of hours of research to give listeners a deeper level of understanding of the music. Whether you’re new to jazz, or a die-hard aficionado, The Jazz Lounge will teach you something new.

Mr. Berland was deeply involved in the fabric of Marin: He was the president of the Kentfield Schools Foundation, a founding member of the Kentfield Planning Advisory Board, was a member of the Marin County Planning Commission, and was its chair during the drafting of the Marin Countywide Plan. During his tenure, he was an undaunted and persistent advocate for affordable/workforce housing in Marin. He was also a member of the Marin County Civil Grand Jury that investigated and issued reports on the promise and problems of the SMART train and Marin Clean Energy. Mr. Berland has mellowed since then, and after retiring from the practice of law, he’s now devoting himself to his great love of jazz.

Since Allan is not a multi-tasker, his wife Joanna volunteered to become the program’s sound engineer, director, and editor. This has opened a new world to her. Raised in Santa Barbara, she’s been a jazz fan since high school. But

Joanna and Allan Berland

she never dreamed that jazz would become such an integral part of her life. So integral, in fact, that it was jazz that brought her and Allan together in 1989. Her work career was spent far from jazz. She was a medical assistant and office manager prior to college. After graduating UCLA, she spent ten years as a bilingual elementary teacher and ESL teacher. That was followed by 16 years as a travel agent, where she met Allan at Bel Tempo Travel (“Good Time Travel” – What an omen!)

Most recently she spent 16 years teaching Spanish to preschoolers in San Rafael before retiring in 2019.
Now she helps Allan produce his shows. She’s learned how to work the sound board and edit audio. She’s quite excited about learning something entirely new in retirement – and having even more opportunities to listen to some great music. It’s one of her many activities she’s enjoying in retirement.
